Guide to Citizenship 2006

So, you're a Tiki. Just in case you find 300 megs of forum conversation intimidating, this document strives to bring together all decisions established there that bear upon you. Corrections and suggestions warmly invited here.

Camp Fees

A camp fee of 30 dollars is asked of all Tikidom citizens. Camp fees contribute to community expenses including kitchen water, fuel, and equipment; gray water pumping; community shower hardware. (The camp fee does not currently 'slide', but we're attentive to special circumstances, so please contact the treasurer, if this fee is problematic.)

To make payment, scribble a check payable to 'Paul Beaudoin', and either mail it to 28683 SE Paradise Rd, Eagle Creek OR 97022, or bring it to the playa for hand-off at the Wednesday camp meeting.

Location

This year, due to a clerical error on the part of BMORG, Tikidom gets two camps: Tikidom and Tikidom 2 ("Tikiburbs"):

Tikidom: 4:30 and Eager - 75 x 100 feet

Hosts the most interactive installations Tikidom has on offer - likely including the poi performance area, reading rooms, the Tikidome, the giant gas pump, and Marty's Tikidom sign.

Tikiburbs: 4:30 and Fate - 50 x 150 feet

Due to it's less public location, Tikiburbs will be the relatively more laid back headquarters, hosting the community shower and kitchen, the scaffolding, and parking for Tabitha Baby.

Unfortunately, we won't know exactly where these camps lie until the first tikis arrive and talk with our placer, Gomonk. Click the map at right for a visual on the likely area.

If you arrive and can't find your fellow Tikis at the locations given here, check the "Playa Info" tent at Center Camp. (Ask the nearest nudist for directions.)

Camp Layout

This year, we may grow as much as 30 percent, yet we're attempting to fit into a camp space potentially 3/4 of last year's size. It's imperative that campers respect the organization set forth by Eunice in the coming days. This ensures optimal community space for all. Tentative maps for the two locations are linked here:

Wednesday Meeting

Remember to hang back at camp Wednesday morning to participate in a brief Tikidom logistics mixer. We'll discuss camp responsibilities and make sure Tikis know their fellow Tikis. This will also be a time to learn about new ways to involve yourself in projects inside Tikidom and greater Black Rock City.

Needed Supplies

The following are supplies Tikidom has a special interest in. For a comprehensive list of recommended gear, check this burningman.com page.

Music

At least two sound systems will be established - one at camp and one on Tabitha. Both will be fed by MP3 and CD capable devices. Additionally, Word Mechanic may bring his satellite radio receiver. Tikis are invited to bring their mix CDs burned either as standard audio CDs or as so-called "data CDs" - where MP3s are maintained in their compressed format and potentially in a folder hierarchy. The latter method allows you to pack substantially more audio on a single CD. For questions about burning CDs, contact paul.

Generators

If you or someone you know has a generator, please consider bringing it along to help power the party.

Firewood

If you have a little extra space, bring scrap, untreated wood to be to be offered up to Brent's Tiki god. Your fellow Tikis will thank you on chilly desert evenings. Affect of donation to personal fertility levels and/or longevity is not known, but believed positive.

Booze

If you're one to enjoy a cold one, share the love by bringing extra. Just remember that plastic and aluminum is always preferred to glass. (Everything is 'top shelf' on the playa; It's the elevation.)

Water

In addition to your own water, please bring a few extra gallons of water to the kitchen for dish washing.

Kitchen

The kitchen is composed of several folding-leg tables, one large propane stove, a battery powered sink, and a number of shade structures. The kitchen is provided as a community space and resource that Tiki citizens may use for their own cooking any time except during scheduled Community Meal time. It is of course essential that everyone using the kitchen be extremely sensitive to the workspace and cleanliness requirements of their fellow citizens.

  • Don't use cookware, dishes, or utensils without permission unless they are declared 'community'
  • If you use an other's or the community's tools, clean them as soon after (or before, ideally) you finish eating.
  • No individual use of the kitchen during scheduled Community meal times.

Please keep these guidelines in mind. They're simple and reasonable, and they keep you in the favor of those gracefully providing the kitchen resources.

Shower

The community shower is a small, simple dome - artfully conceived by Benjamin - available to all Tikis who bring his/her own solar shower bag. The dome is enclosed by fabric for total privacy. A low platform inside suspends tikis over a large gray water collection tank.

Expand image at right to see what happens when a project's designer isn't present for said project's execution. (This year's shower 'dome' may be more dome-like)

Community Meals

Community meals are an optional activity (and added expense) that Tikidom citizens can opt into to benefit from two solid, well-balanced meals per day - one 'brunch' occurring at 8-9am, and one dinner occurring at 6-8pm. The first community meal occurs on Tuesday morning, and the last one is dinner Sunday night. Sign-ups for community meals is now closed. For more information, read the Community Meals page.
